WHO WE ARE

STEPS AHEAD UNIVERSAL READERS is an educational project with the main purpose of transforming lives in villages through reading intervention programs. The emphasis is on supporting less fortunate people, especially kids, in remote areas by guiding them in a useful way, especially by providing a more easy, convenient access to books and literature in general, particularly for persons with special needs, following our program theme “Reading for change”.
We want the program being accessible to all, irrespective of age, gender, race, class, education background, religion, disability etc.

WHEN AND WHERE

The project was started in Kilifi County, Kenya, on 4th August 2018 with around 30 members, 15 children,12 youth and 3 senior members representing the board committee.
Using “Reading for change”as our program theme, we have been able to change the mindsets of different groups of people in rural communities especially children and youth who are more vulnerable .
Activities include, reading, writing, discussing (e.g. about national or local topics), introducing foreign languages to the kids, E-readers sessions, entertaining team games, singing etc. Last but not least, playing football is one of the major outdoor activities for young boys. By doing this kind of rural outreach, We found this is a concept that needs to be embraced and researched on.
Though it’s challenging, the gains thereafter are worthwhile because people are reached and their needs met. There is a lot of potential if it is approached wisely and made user friendly. After all, reading a book can take you through an imaginary journey full of mysteries and great adventures.
This program is an inventive way of fostering the enjoyment of reading as a recreational activity and empowerment program to the majority of the rural communities
who are helpless and in dire need of knowledge regarding various issues affecting their daily lives. The idea started as one of the measures to help curb drug abuse menace, rising teenage pregnancies ,school dropouts, early marriages etc and as an alternative to idling in the streets by creating awareness through

(1). Supporting literacy activities within rural communities in Kilifi County and the surrounding environment.

(2)Promoting good morals by enlightening more on drug abuse hazards which is the major cause of crime.

(3)Addressing problems affecting children, youth and teenagers especially the girl child on early pregnancies.
